Overview
This S.E. Shires Axial Flow Q-Series tenor valve section is a recent-production example in mint pre-owned condition. It was originally part of a Q-Series tenor trombone and has seen very little playing time. The valve action is smooth, compression is strong, and the component is ready for use in a modular Shires setup.
Shires axial valves are known for their open feel and consistent response, and Q-Series examples like this integrate seamlessly with both Q-Series and Custom Series Shires trombone components. Pre-owned Shires valve sections are not commonly available, especially in this condition.
As an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since before the Eastman acquisition, we regularly help players match valve sections with slides and bells to refine response and flexibility in a modular Shires system.
Player Perspective
From a professional player’s standpoint, the Shires axial valve offers a very open blow with stable intonation and smooth legato transitions. Many players moving from traditional rotary valves notice a freer feel and broader sound when using an axial setup.
In real playing situations, there is very little difference in performance between Q-Series axial valve sections and Custom Series examples. This makes a clean pre-owned Q axial valve section a practical way to upgrade or rebuild a Shires tenor trombone without replacing an entire instrument.
