This Courtois AC402 TRR Xtreme Professional Tenor Trombone is a premium small/medium bore model designed for advanced and professional players seeking a distinctive alternative to the mainstream horns commonly seen today.
It features a .508 bore standard weight handslide and an 8" one-piece rose brass bell, made from an alloy containing approximately 90% copper. The bell’s higher copper content gives the horn a rich, dark, and velvety tone, while still retaining the agility and brightness that jazz and commercial players need when pushing for power. Much like a vintage Conn 88H, this horn can play warm and complex at softer dynamics, then light up with brilliance and sizzle when pushed.
This instrument was previously owned by a professional Courtois artist and has been meticulously maintained. It is in excellent playing and cosmetic condition, with no dents, dings, or previous structural repairs. It has received full shop service, including a chemical bath, inspection, and slide alignment.
The handslide action is exceptionally smooth, with no plating wear, alignment issues, or mechanical noise. Courtois designed this model with an ergonomic Earl Williams-style curved hand grip, which offers improved comfort and balance during long playing sessions — especially appreciated by lead players and soloists.
The Courtois AC402 TRR represents a top-tier alternative to more common models from Bach, Conn, or Yamaha. It delivers a darker tonal palette without sacrificing projection or clarity, making it ideal for jazz lead, solo features, or chamber and commercial work where a distinctive voice is desired.
As of 2025, this model sells for over $3,600 new, making this example a strong value and a rare chance to see a near-perfect specimen of this respected model.
