This King 2B Silversonic was made in the late 1940s by the H.N. White Company, serial number 299404, and remains one of the most celebrated lead trombones ever built. Originally designed for Tommy Dorsey, the 2B was one of the earliest professional dual-bore (.481”/.491”) models created specifically for big band lead and solo playing. Although Dorsey himself didn’t use a silver model, the Silversonic line introduced an even more elegant upgrade — a solid sterling silver bell paired with gold-plated inner flare and ornate gold-leaf engraving.
This particular example was beautifully restored by the highly regarded H.N. White restoration team, known throughout the vintage brass community (especially on eBay) for their faithful work. The restoration includes replacement inner slide tubes, fresh lacquer, and fully preserved original styling. The engraving detail is striking — a true work of art — and the slide action is fast, straight, and ready to play.
Trombonists still reach for the 2B Silversonic when seeking brilliance, control, and tone flexibility in lead or solo contexts. While new models exist, few can match the presence and craftsmanship of a 1940s original. Its playability lives up to the legend — once you pick it up, you understand why it became the dream horn of its era.
Includes the original H.N. White case in very good condition.
Why is the King 2B Silversonic still favored by modern lead trombone players?
The 2B Silversonic offers a vibrant, focused tone with dual-bore agility and unmatched projection — especially in upper register work. Its sterling silver bell gives the sound extra brilliance and core, while the lightweight feel and superb slide action make it a top choice for lead jazz players even today. Vintage craftsmanship from the H.N. White era continues to outperform many modern alternatives.
