Overview

This Humes & Berg Trombone Pixie Mute with original red-and-white finish is the classic Stonelined aluminum pixie mute that generations of jazz trombonists have used for plunger effects and traditional jazz tone colors. Made by Humes & Berg in Indiana near Chicago, these mutes are still considered the standard choice when players want their trombone to “talk” using a plunger.

The pixie mute is famously associated with Al Grey of the Count Basie Orchestra, whose plunger style defined the sound of classic swing trombone. Used together with a plunger, the pixie mute produces the classic vocal effect heard in trad jazz, swing band, and early New Orleans-style ensembles.

Proper fit depends on bell size. Some players lightly trim or reposition corks so the mute seats deeper in the bell, allowing the plunger to fully cover the mute for better pitch and tone. Larger bore (.547) tenor trombones often fit without modification, while smaller bells may need minor adjustment.

These Humes & Berg pixie mutes are not produced in large quantities today and can be difficult to find when players need one. We keep a small stock available whenever possible.
