Overview
This S.E. Shires T47GLW tenor trombone slide was previously offered as a used component and represents one of the most popular lightweight large-bore Shires handslides. Built in .547 bore with gold brass outer tubes and standard slide width, the T47GLW provides a responsive feel with classic warmth and projection.
The slide width is similar to a Conn 88H slide, offering familiar ergonomics for players coming from traditional symphonic tenor setups. The lightweight designโachieved by omitting oversleeves in the upper outer slide tubesโcreates a freer response and quicker articulation while maintaining depth of tone.
This example was in very good playing condition when sold, with smooth inner tubes, straight alignment, and only minor cosmetic lacquer wear at the grip and cork barrel areas. One removable Shires modular leadpipe was included.
Player Perspective
Lightweight Shires slides like the T47GLW tend to respond immediately and feel nimble without losing core sound. Many players choose this configuration for chamber work, solo playing, and orchestral settings where clarity and flexibility matter.
Compared to heavier oversleeved slides, the T47GLW speaks faster and requires slightly less effort to start notes. At the same time, the gold brass construction keeps the tonal center warm and stable. Itโs a great example of how Shires modular design lets players fine-tune response and color.
The Brass Exchange has been an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since before the Eastman acquisition, and weโve helped hundreds of players match slides, bells, valves, and leadpipes to find the right setup.
โฆ Comparison โ T47GLW vs Standard T47 vs TW Slides
For players researching Shires components:
โข T47GLW: Lightweight feel, quick response, warm gold brass tone
โข Standard T47: Slightly heavier feel, more resistance and stability
โข TW Slides: Narrower width options for players seeking compact ergonomics
These differences are subtle but meaningful when dialing in a modular Shires setup.
