SHIRES

This S.E. Shires B1 2YM bass trombone bell is a professional modular bell section designed to pair with any current or legacy Shires bass components — including both Custom Series and Q Series bass trombones. It features a 9.5" yellow brass bell with a B1 (Type 1) taper, which has a more gradual flare profile than the BII (Type 2) taper. Many players describe the B1 taper as having a more Conn-like response, while the BII feels more Bach-like in its blow and tonal shape.

The “2YM” designation refers to Shires’ lightweight yellow brass construction with a medium gauge, giving this bell a balanced mix of warmth, clarity, and projection. It is an excellent all-around choice for orchestral, band, or large ensemble settings where color and blend are as important as power.

This bell showed some lacquer wear and evidence of past dent work, but it was structurally straight, fully aligned, and played beautifully. It required no further service and was ready to install and play immediately. In 2025, a new Shires bass trombone bell purchased separately retails for around $1,550, making this pre-owned bell a strong value at the time of sale.

About Shires Bass Bells:
S.E. Shires offers several bass bell tapers and materials, each with unique playing characteristics.

  • B1 taper (Type 1): More gradual flare, broader feel, often compared to classic Conn-style response.

  • BII taper (Type 2): Quicker flare, more focused core and projection, often likened to Bach-style response.

  • Bells are available in yellow brass, gold brass, or red brass, with various weights and treatments to fine-tune tone and feel.

These modular bells are fully compatible across the entire Shires system, giving players the ability to build or modify a custom bass trombone to suit their style.

🤔

Will this bell fit my existing Shires bass trombone?
Yes. All Shires bells are fully modular and compatible with every current and legacy Shires bass trombone handslide and valve section, including Q Series.

What’s the difference between the B1 and BII tapers?
The B1 taper has a more gradual flare and broader, more open feel (often compared to Conn), while the BII has a faster flare for a more focused, compact sound (often compared to Bach).
