KING

🔎 Historical Perspective

This King 3BF Tenor Trombone, built in the early 1970s, is a fine example of one of the most influential small-bore F-attachment designs ever produced. The King 3B family has been a jazz and commercial music standard since the 1950s, and the 3BF version adds useful low-range flexibility without sacrificing the classic King response.

This example showed typical lacquer wear for its age but remained a straight instrument with no signs of major trauma or bell repair. The slide was truly excellent — smooth, fast, and quiet — and the trombone had just received a full shop service including chemical cleaning, alignment, and mechanical inspection so it was ready for immediate use.

The 3BF features an 8" yellow brass bell paired with a .508 bore lightweight nickel silver handslide. This combination delivers a bright, focused sound with strong projection and a certain sweetness that players often associate with King instruments from this period. Many advancing students and developing professionals consider the 3BF an ideal first trigger trombone because of its balance, manageable weight, and versatility.

Equally at home in concert band, jazz band, pit orchestra, or small ensemble work, horns like this remain popular decades after production. It included the original case in good functional condition.
