CONN

Produced in 1970 during the final years of Conn’s historic Elkhart factory, this Conn 8H (serial number N36817) represents the end of an era for one of the most iconic American large bore tenor trombones ever made. It features all the traditional specifications that define the 8H lineage—8.5" rose brass bell, standard Conn width .547 bore handslide, and a warm, projecting sound favored by generations of symphonic and jazz players.

This instrument retains all original parts and lacquer, with only light cosmetic wear on the bell stem and neckpipe from normal handling over time. The handslide is excellent, with straight inners and outers, tight alignment, and only a minor plating blemish that does not affect action. It speaks cleanly, plays openly, and offers that signature wide Conn sound with depth and color that modern copies often struggle to replicate.

Whether you’re a collector, a student of trombone history, or a performer seeking that unmistakable vintage Elkhart response, this 8H is a strong example from Conn’s golden period. Includes original Conn case. Mouthpiece not included.

☑️ Why are late-Elkhart Conn 8H trombones so desirable among collectors and professionals?
Because they were the final horns produced before Conn’s relocation to Abilene, TX, where manufacturing changes affected quality. Elkhart-era 8H models are revered for their consistent bell alloy, attention to handslide craftsmanship, and tonal depth—making them a benchmark for orchestral large bore tenors even decades later.

This instrument is now part of our Archive of Sold Trombones and remains listed for reference by musicians, educators, and collectors.
