SHIRES

Overview

This S.E. Shires 7YLW tenor bell flare was a custom Boston-built example featuring an 8.5" lightweight yellow brass bell with a soldered bead wire rim. The 7YLW is one of the most popular non-artist-specific Shires tenor bell models, valued by players for its balanced response and versatility across orchestral, chamber, and solo playing.

The bell was compatible with all past and current Shires modular components and showed no previous damage or repair. There was minor lacquer wear consistent with careful use, but overall appearance was excellent and the bell retained the lively, responsive character that lightweight yellow brass Shires bells are known for.

๐Ÿ“ธ Early Studio Images โ€“ Part of Our Shop History

Some photos here were taken during the early years of The Brass Exchange, before our current fine-art instrument photography setup was developed. As we refined our lighting rigs and studio workflow, image quality improvedโ€”but these original photos remain part of the instrumentโ€™s story and the evolution of our shop.

They can also be helpful for musicians or photographers exploring how to photograph brass instruments and musical gear with accurate color and reflection control.

Player Perspective

The 7YLW is often chosen as an โ€œall-aroundโ€ Shires tenor bell because it sits comfortably between warmth and clarity. Lightweight construction gives quick response and easy articulation, while the soldered bead rim helps maintain tonal focus and projection.

Many players moving from Bach 42 or Conn 88H setups find the 7YLW familiar yet more flexible, especially when paired with a lightweight slide. Itโ€™s a dependable choice for players building their first Shires modular setup or refining an existing one.

The Brass Exchange has been an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since before the Eastman acquisition, and weโ€™ve helped hundreds of players match bells, slides, valves, and leadpipes into balanced Shires systems.

โœฆ Comparison โ€“ 7YLW vs 7Y vs 2R Bells

For players researching Shires bell options:

โ€ข 7YLW: Lightweight yellow brass, versatile all-around response
โ€ข 7Y Standard: Slightly more mass, a bit more stability
โ€ข 2RVE Bells: Rose brass with unsoldered rim- modeled in the style of vintage Elkhart Conn 88

The 7YLW remains one of the most widely recommended starting points for a modular Shires tenor setup.
