KING

πŸ”Ž Historical Perspective

This King 4BF Silversonic Trombone, built in the mid-1970s, is a beautiful example of King’s sterling silver bell craftsmanship. It features an 8.5" sterling silver bell with lacquer finish and gold-plated inner bell, paired with a .547 bore handslide. The Silversonic models are known for their clarity, projection, and tonal energy, and this one was in excellent condition with near-perfect lacquer and a truly fantastic handslide.

King’s sterling silver models trace their lineage back to the earlier Silvertone name, later changed to Silversonic. While many players associate Silversonic bells with the 2B and 3B jazz models, King also produced symphonic tenor and bass trombones using the same sterling silver fabrication process. These instruments are prized for their combination of brilliance and depth.

From a player’s perspective, sterling silver bells require more energy to fully resonate at 100%, but once mastered the tonal energy is enormous and cannot be rivaled by a traditional brass trombone. This 4BF delivers that gorgeous, centered King sound with strong projection and clarity suitable for jazz section work, pops orchestras, or symphonic settings.

This example showed no signs of prior damage, required no additional service, and included the original case β€” a fine example of a classic King Silversonic.
