Overview

This S.E. Shires Q30YR tenor trombone represents one of the most dependable large-bore orchestral tenor setups in the Shires Q-Series lineup. Built with the respected QI-taper bell and rotary F-attachment, the Q30YR offers the classic Shires response with excellent balance, clear articulation, and a warm, centered sound.

All Q-Series components are fully compatible with the Shires Custom Series platform, so players can experiment with bells, slides, or valves later if desired. That flexibility makes the Q30YR a strong choice for advancing students, professionals, and players moving into serious orchestral or large-ensemble work.

This example includes the original Shires case, mouthpiece, care kit, and three interchangeable leadpipes. As an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since before the Eastman acquisition, we’ve worked with hundreds of Shires setups, and the Q30YR remains one of the most consistent modern tenor trombones available.

Player Perspective

From a professional player’s standpoint, the Q30YR delivers a balanced orchestral tenor sound with stable intonation and easy response. The QI-taper bell speaks clearly in soft dynamics while still projecting in large halls, and the rotary valve keeps the airflow smooth and predictable.

Players coming from Bach 42B or Conn 88H setups often find the transition to a Q30YR very natural. Slotting is secure, the slide feel is familiar, and the modular design allows gradual upgrades without replacing the entire instrument.
