π Historical Perspective
This King 4B Silversonic SGX Trombone, Model 2104, was a beautifully preserved single-owner instrument originally purchased about ten years before sale. It remained in superb condition with no history of damage or repair. The handslide had just received a full professional setup and was smooth, fast, and perfectly aligned.
The SGX version of the 4B features an 8.5" sterling silver bell with gold-plated inner flare and a .547 bore nickel silver handslide. This combination produces the clarity and projection that Silversonic models are known for, with a larger, more powerful voice than the smaller 2B and 3B designs. Players often describe the sound as focused yet expansive, with strong presence and a full bottom end that carries easily in jazz band, pops orchestra, or commercial ensemble settings.
From a pro playerβs perspective, sterling silver bells require more energy to fully resonate at 100%, but once mastered the tonal energy is enormous and cannot be rivaled by a traditional brass trombone. This example delivered that characteristic King clarity with plenty of projection and warmth.
King no longer produces the SGX configuration, making examples like this appealing to players who appreciate the classic King large-bore Silversonic sound. It included its original combination-lock case in excellent condition.
