Bach 42BO
Included, needs handles
.547
8.5

This is a Bach 42BO large bore tenor trombone with the classic open wrap F-attachment, built approximately 20 years ago and still in excellent playing condition. It has been owned by a single professional player and stored carefully for several years, showing the build quality and resilience that has made the 42 series one of Bach’s most enduring designs.

The .547" large bore and 8.5" yellow brass bell deliver the broad, rich tone the 42BO is known for, while the open wrap design allows for freer airflow and smoother response when using the F-attachment. The valve section on this instrument is exceptionally good—among the best-playing 42BO valves we’ve encountered—and the handslide is smooth, quick, and properly aligned, requiring no additional service to improve playability.

Cosmetically, it shows a few minor mute dings and some lacquer wear, both of which will be addressed prior to delivery. Updated photos will be posted when available. The horn comes in a Bach hard case that is structurally sound but has broken handles—fine for transport but many players may prefer to upgrade to a modern case.

This 42BO represents an outstanding option for an advanced high school or college-bound trombonist ready for a professional large bore tenor. New Bach 42BO models retail for over $3,300, making this a smart way to access the renowned Bach sound and response at a fraction of the cost.

🤔 What makes the 42BO different from the 42B?

The 42BO uses an open wrap F-attachment, which creates less resistance and a more free-blowing feel than the traditional closed wrap design of the 42B. It’s a popular choice among orchestral players who want quicker airflow and slightly more flexibility in the low register.

🤔 Why is the 42BO a good choice for advancing students?

The 42BO combines professional build quality with dependable playability, making it a strong platform for students moving into college or conservatory programs. Its balanced tone, excellent projection, and reliable valve/slide setup allow players to focus on developing sound and technique rather than fighting their equipment.
