This S.E. Shires 7GLW bell section is an 8" gold brass flare designed for use with both .525 medium-bore and .547 large-bore Shires setups. It is compatible with all Shires valve sections or a straight neckpipe, making it one of the most versatile bell options in the modular Custom Series system.
This example was lightly used and in excellent overall condition, with only a few minor “mute kiss” dings that did not affect playability. Tonally, the gold brass construction brings extra warmth and depth compared to yellow brass bells, while the lightweight design (LW) adds resonance and responsiveness, making it well-suited for both solo and ensemble use.
Gold brass contains a higher copper content than yellow brass, which emphasizes tonal warmth and color. When paired with a lightweight design, this bell provides both richness of sound and a quick, lively response. Many players find this combination ideal for situations where projection and warmth need to coexist.
The Brass Exchange is proud to be an Authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop, providing players direct access to Boston-built Custom Series components. Unlike standard Shires dealers who only carry the Q Series, Pro Shops work with the Custom Shop line — giving musicians access to professional-grade parts like this 7GLW bell.
This bell section has since been sold and is included in our Archive of Sold Instruments & Components as a reference for players researching Shires options.
