Overview

This vintage 1975 Bach 12LT trombone comes from the well-known Corporation era of Bach production in Elkhart, Indiana. The instrument features a yellow brass bell paired with the lightweight .500 bore 12LT handslide, a configuration designed for quick articulation, efficiency, and strong projection in jazz, studio, and commercial playing environments.

This particular example retains its original lacquer and original components, along with the factory hard case. The handslide has received professional servicing with full alignment and treatment, resulting in a fast, smooth action that feels responsive and tension-free.

There has been a previous repair to the bell flare, specifically a clean patch at the wire rim. Importantly, the bell itself was not creased or structurally compromised. The repair was completed neatly and the instrument remains acoustically strong and resonant, performing exactly as a good 12LT should — nimble, lively, and expressive across all registers.

✦ Historical Perspective

Many players consider the Bach 12LT models from the Corporation era to represent some of the finest small-bore trombones Bach produced after the transition from Mt. Vernon to Elkhart in 1963. During the 1970s, Bach maintained a high level of manufacturing consistency while still preserving many of Vincent Bach’s original design principles.

The 12LT variant features a lighter slide construction compared with the standard Model 12, giving players a quicker response and slightly brighter articulation. This design became especially popular among lead trombonists, studio players, and commercial musicians, particularly in jazz settings where clarity and projection are essential.

While new Bach 12LT trombones remain available today, many experienced players continue to seek out well-preserved vintage examples from this period because of their balance of tone, responsiveness, and craftsmanship.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask

Is the Bach 12LT different from a standard Bach 12?
Yes. The 12LT uses a lightweight slide construction compared to the standard Model 12. This reduces overall slide mass and often results in quicker response and slightly brighter articulation, which many lead players prefer.

What type of music is the Bach 12LT best suited for?
The .500 bore design and lightweight slide make the 12LT ideal for jazz ensembles, big band lead playing, commercial work, and studio recording, where clarity and projection are important.

Are vintage Bach small-bore trombones still desirable today?
Absolutely. Many players continue to seek out Corporation-era Bach trombones because of their consistent build quality and the way they balance tone, efficiency, and response.
