KING
2B
Included

This vintage King 2B Liberty, built in 1945, represents the golden age of American jazz and big band music. Produced as WWII was coming to a close and the Big Band Era was in full swing, this trombone is a direct link to the sound and style of that era. It was recently acquired from a music educator whose father β€” a professional trombonist β€” owned and preserved this instrument as part of a larger collection.

This particular 2B has been beautifully overhauled and re-lacquered, likely many years ago, and the work was done with great care. The finish looks excellent, and the horn plays even better. The slide is superb, offering fast, centered response β€” and the tuning slide is serialized and matching, a great detail for collectors.

The tone is exactly what professional jazz players seek in a vintage 2B: focused, brilliant, and capable of cutting through an ensemble with ease. It’s the kind of horn that could easily carry a lead book in a big band or serve as a foundational instrument for a developing pro. This example comes with a non-original King case from the 1970s.

Why is the King 2B Liberty so important to jazz trombone history?
The King 2B Liberty is one of the most iconic small bore jazz trombones ever made. With its compact dual bore slide and brilliant bell response, it became a go-to horn for many top players during the Big Band Era and beyond. Legends like Tommy Dorsey, Kai Winding, and Urbie Green famously used the 2B to shape the sound of modern jazz trombone. Instruments from the 1940s β€” like this 1945 example β€” are especially prized for their craftsmanship, flexibility, and projection. The 2B’s lively feel and signature tone continue to influence jazz trombonists to this day.
