KING
3B

This early 1950s King 3B trombone is a supreme example from the highly regarded H.N. White era. Known for their legendary craftsmanship and unmatched tonal clarity, these early 3Bs are widely considered the gold standard for jazz players—and this one may be the finest we’ve seen in years.

It features an 8" yellow brass bell and a .508 bore handslide, with all original parts and lacquer. Nothing has been overhauled, refinished, or modified. The slide is exceptionally smooth, with perfect alignment and no chrome wear on the inner tubes. Clearly, this horn has not seen excessive playing time, yet it’s been well preserved.

The brass on this early model is slightly heavier than the lighter alloys used on later 3Bs, resulting in a stronger, more focused projection. The sound is sweet, rich, and centered—ideal for jazz soloing or commercial section work. One unique detail: the tuning slide is longer than on later models, allowing players to tune more comfortably without pulling out too far. Many veteran King players notice and appreciate this subtle but meaningful design feature.

J.J. Johnson famously played a King 3B like this for most of his career, and it's easy to hear why. There's something unmistakably "right" about the 3B sound—nimble, warm, and incredibly responsive.

Includes the original King hard case and even the original cleaning rod. For serious King enthusiasts or collectors, this instrument represents the pinnacle of early 3B design.
