This vintage King 2B Liberty was crafted in 1950 during the prized H.N. White era in Cleveland, Ohio. It remains one of the most iconic jazz trombones ever produced and continues to be a benchmark for lead players and soloists across generations.
The 2B features a .481"/.491" dual bore slide paired with a 7.375" yellow brass bell, giving it a warm yet brilliant tone with just the right amount of edge for jazz combo, big band, or commercial work. This example has all original parts, including the bell, slide, ferrules, and tuning slide components.
The instrument has been professionally serviced and cleaned, and the handslide was fully realigned in our shop. The slide action is extremely smooth and fast — especially responsive when paired with Yamaha slide lubricant, which this one was tested with during setup. A few small dings were removed from the slide crook, which was then re-lacquered to preserve appearance and protect the metal. The rest of the horn remains in original finish with only minor cosmetic wear consistent with age.
This horn has the signature "King sound" — focused, sweet, and vibrant — perfect for lead players seeking a tight core with flexibility and projection. The tone is lyrical and expressive, with quick response across all registers.
Included is a Cronkhite black fabric gig bag, known for durability and lightweight protection. Upgrades to brown or black compact leather Cronkhite TSG cases are available for $125, or deduct $200 from the price if you prefer no case. Call us directly for case adjustment options if desired.
What is the tonal advantage of the King 2B Liberty?
The King 2B is known for its focused tone, brilliant overtones, and nimble articulation. It has long been a top choice for jazz and lead players, delivering excellent projection without being overly bright or harsh. The dual bore slide adds a natural resistance curve that supports control and clarity in fast passages.
Is the H.N. White era different from later King models?
Yes — horns made during the H.N. White period (pre-1965) are generally considered superior in craftsmanship and consistency. Many professional players and collectors specifically seek out Cleveland-built Kings for their sound, balance, and vintage character.
Can a modern case be used with a vintage King 2B?
Yes. Most modern compact gig bags and hard cases accommodate the 2B’s small bell and narrow slide profile. Cronkhite, Protec, and Marcus Bonna all offer options that work well. This listing included a Cronkhite fabric case, with options to upgrade or deduct for case preference.
This H.N. White King 2B has been sold and now resides in our Historical Archive for reference.
