This Jinbao Contrabass Trombone is a rare modern interpretation of the Miraphone-style contrabass, built in BB♭ with an FF valve attachment. Jinbao is one of the most prominent brass instrument manufacturers in China, producing OEM models sold under various names including Dillon, Wessex, Mack Brass, Allora, Schiller, and Stauffer.
Unlike traditional bass trombones, this horn features a double slide design, which keeps slide positions the same as a standard tenor or bass trombone while offering the extended range of a BB♭ tuba. The slide is triple bore, starting at .551", stepping up to .590", and ending at approximately .614", offering a gradual and broadening feel. The valve section is oversized as well, measuring about .630"—a design that enhances airflow in the low register.
The bell is 9.5" in diameter, but don’t let the size fool you—the bell throat is significantly larger than that of a typical bass trombone, delivering massive sound projection and low-end power. The playing range is equivalent to a BB♭ tuba, making this instrument ideal for doubling situations, film scoring, experimental large ensemble writing, or bass section novelty work.
The mouthpiece receiver accepts a tuba shank, though a standard tuba mouthpiece often feels too dull. A shallow cup mouthpiece—such as one designed for F tuba—or a JK 6D works exceptionally well for projection and clarity.
This horn has been fully cleaned and serviced in our shop. A small crease on the flare was carefully removed during service. Otherwise, the instrument is in excellent playing condition, cosmetically clean, and ready to go. Includes a well-fitting hard case and mouthpiece.
What is a contrabass trombone used for?
Contrabass trombones are most often used in film scores, large brass choirs, or modern orchestral settings where extremely low brass voices are needed. Some players also use them for effect in jazz or experimental music.
Is this Jinbao model the same as the Miraphone?
This instrument is closely modeled after the Miraphone contrabass trombone, with similar bore specs and wrap design. However, manufacturing quality, materials, and finish may differ. Jinbao builds under many brands; this particular example is a solid performer with professional-level capabilities after proper setup.
Can I use my regular bass trombone mouthpiece with this?
No—this horn requires a tuba shank mouthpiece. A shallow-cup F tuba mouthpiece is often ideal. Deep tuba mouthpieces will sound unfocused and dull.
Does it feel like a bass trombone to play?
Not exactly—it’s larger in every way, but the slide positions remain the same due to the double-slide construction. It takes some adjustment, but experienced bass trombonists will find it familiar enough to navigate quickly.
