Vintage H.N.White King Bass Case
bass bore (bore .562")
9

This exceptional Bach 50 bass trombone hails from the legendary New York Era, making it a true gem for both players and collectors. The bell section is raw brass, showing age-appropriate patina without any signs of major repair or damage. It retains its original handslide and removable leadpipe, which is rare for instruments of this vintage.

This particular horn spent over three decades on the West Coast with a top-tier professional orchestra player. Following his retirement, it arrived here in outstanding condition, having clearly been cared for throughout its life. The 9" bell delivers that unmistakable Bach sound—rich, warm, and loaded with lush overtones.

The slide is near perfect, with exceptional alignment and no plating issues. One of the most compelling features is the valve linkage, which was likely modified by Larry Minick, the famed L.A. brass technician known for his precision work. The linkage is fast, quiet, and highly responsive—ideal for orchestral performance.

The instrument comes housed in a vintage H.N. White King bass trombone case, which fits securely and adds to the historical charm.

Of all the vintage Bach 50s we’ve evaluated, this one stands out for its ease of play, tonal depth, and overall responsiveness. It is not only a museum-worthy piece, but also a fully functional pro-level instrument that’s ready to be played today.

What makes a New York Era Bach 50 special?
Bach instruments from the New York factory (pre-1964) are renowned for their unique craftsmanship and tonal characteristics. The bells were hand-spun, and the brass alloys used at that time gave the instruments a warmer, more nuanced sound.

Was Larry Minick involved in this instrument’s setup?
While not officially documented, the valve linkage shows hallmarks of Minick’s craftsmanship. This includes smooth, tight tolerances and silent operation—features he was known for.

Is the H.N. White case original to the horn?
It’s not the original Bach case but is a period-appropriate King case from H.N. White, offering both protection and collectible value.
