Overview & Playing Characteristics

The Yamaha YSL-681B Ian Bousfield Model is a large-bore tenor trombone (.547) featuring an 8.5" gold-brass bell that produces a full, resonant tone with excellent warmth and projection. This early example, serial no. 001367, reflects Yamaha’s attention to precision and balance that professional players have relied on for decades.

It includes a standard-weight straight-bore slide with yellow-brass outer tubes and a brass end crook—responsive, centered, and extremely smooth. The open-wrap rotor section provides free, even airflow, making it a comfortable instrument for orchestral, solo, or advanced student use.

This horn received full professional service in our shop, including a chemical bath, rotor service, water-key refresh, and minor cosmetic cleanup. A prior bell crease was properly repaired; the lacquer remains in good condition with only a small visual mark. Mechanically, it plays beautifully—the slide and valve action are superb, easily offsetting the minor cosmetic history.

Who It’s For

An ideal choice for advancing players or adults purchasing their first large-bore F-attachment trombone, the YSL-681B offers Yamaha’s characteristic reliability, smooth slide, and comfortable ergonomics. It delivers a classic large-bore sound at a price point that makes it attractive for students upgrading from intermediate horns or professionals seeking a dependable secondary instrument.

Includes a mouthpiece and a clean older-style Protec case with a new zipper pull installed. The interior was fully cleaned and remains protective and functional.
