Yamaha YSL-646 Tenor Trombone
This Yamaha YSL-646 Medium Bore .525 Tenor Trombone is a professional-quality model originally introduced in 1976 and distributed mainly in Japan and Europe. The one featured here dates from the 1980s and remains a sought-after instrument thanks to its versatile design and exceptional build quality. It includes a yellow brass bell, lightweight handslide, and a standard rotor F-attachment. The trombone takes a small shank mouthpiece and offers excellent tonal flexibility.
Many educators and performers agree that medium bore models like the YSL-646 are easier to control than large bore (.547) instruments, making them an ideal stepping stone for students ready for their first trigger horn. The slide on this trombone is very responsive, and the valve section is in excellent working condition with great compression and fast action. It’s well suited for concert band, orchestra, small ensemble work, and jazz.
While technically a pro-level instrument, the YSL-646 fills a unique niche—offering the tone and durability of a professional model with the playability needed by younger or intermediate players. The original case is in good condition and protects the horn well during transport.
This trombone has no playability issues and is an excellent representation of Yamaha’s craftsmanship from this period. Modern equivalents like the Yamaha YSL-640 retail for over $2,400. Though the mouthpiece is not included, this archived instrument offered exceptional value when in stock.
Why do players still seek out vintage Yamaha 646 trombones?
Players love the Yamaha YSL-646 for its precise intonation, efficient airflow, and lighter feel. Its .525 bore allows for warm, centered tone while remaining nimble—ideal for all-around use. Vintage models also offer exceptional value compared to newer equivalents, making them popular among students and serious hobbyists.
