πŸ“Œ Archive Reference Notice

This Yamaha YSL-446G intermediate tenor trombone has been sold and is now part of The Brass Exchange Archive of Sold Instruments.

It is shown here as a historical and reference example for players researching Yamaha step-up trombones that bridge the gap between student and full large-bore professional models.

Overview

The Yamaha YSL-446G is an intermediate-level tenor trombone designed for advancing players who want many of the tonal and build characteristics of a professional instrument, without moving all the way to a full .547 large-bore design.

This model features a .525 bore handslide paired with an 8.5-inch gold brass bell, offering a warm, flexible sound with easier control and articulation than larger symphonic instruments. It has long been regarded as an excellent β€œstep-up” option for players transitioning beyond beginner horns.

This particular example had been owned by a high school student and saw very light use. Prior to sale, it received full professional service in our shop, including a chemical cleaning, slide alignment, rotor service, polish, and restringing. At the time of sale, the valve was airtight, quiet, and responsive, and slide action was exceptional.

Player Perspective

The YSL-446G occupies a very practical niche in Yamaha’s lineup. While the bell flare matches that of many professional-level trombones, the slightly smaller bore makes the instrument easier to manage for a wide range of players.

This configuration is especially well suited for:

Advancing students moving up from a beginner trombone
Adult players downsizing from a .547 bore
Players seeking a warm, centered tone for solo, ensemble, or church settings

The result is an instrument that feels substantial and refined, yet forgiving and efficient to play.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask

What makes the YSL-446G a good step-up trombone?
It balances professional-style features, such as the 8.5-inch gold brass bell, with a .525 bore that offers easier control than a full large-bore trombone. This makes it ideal for players upgrading from a student instrument.

Does it use a small or large shank mouthpiece?
The YSL-446G uses a small shank mouthpiece. At the time of sale, a matching Yamaha mouthpiece was included, and the instrument accepts standard small shank options such as a Bach 6.5AL or 7C.
