Overview
This Bach 42B Corporation Era trombone, serial number 36270, was built in the 1970s and represents one of the most recognizable large bore tenor designs ever produced.
We enjoy working with vintage trombones like this because they often come with a story—and this one did. A single-owner instrument, it had been closet-kept for over 30 years before arriving at our shop.
Upon arrival, the trombone received full professional service, including a chemical cleaning and mechanical inspection. The result is a solid-playing vintage Bach that remains true to its original build.
Condition & Shop Work
The bell flare had a few dings and a small crease, which were carefully removed in our shop. A faint trace remains under close inspection, visible in certain lighting, but overall the repair came out very nicely.
This instrument retains:
- original lacquer
- original parts throughout
- no evidence of red rot or plating issues
There is moderate lacquer wear across the instrument, which is typical for Bach trombones of this era, as finishes from that period were not as durable as modern lacquer systems.
The handslide is in very good condition—smooth, properly aligned, and fully functional.
Player Perspective
This is a classic Bach 42B through and through.
- 8.5" yellow brass bell
- .547 large bore
- standard weight handslide
The result is the familiar broad, warm Bach sound that has made this model a long-standing standard in orchestral and ensemble playing.
There’s a reason so many players return to the 42B—it delivers a tonal core and response that feels immediately recognizable. Once players spend time on a good example, they often understand why this model has remained so popular for decades.
Who This Trombone Fits
This would be an excellent choice for:
- advancing students moving into their first professional-level instrument
- players seeking the classic Bach 42 sound without the cost of a new model
- musicians who appreciate well-maintained vintage trombones
If I had a high school student today looking for a first pro-level horn—but not ready for a $5,000+ investment—this would be at the top of the list.
Included
- Original Bach case in excellent condition
