Bach

This used Bach 42B tenor trombone dates to the mid-1980s (serial #67599) and includes all original parts and lacquer. We performed a full shop service including chemical bath and complete mechanical inspection. Despite some visible lacquer wear—typical of Bach horns from this era—there are no dents, dings, or structural issues.

This is a traditional .547 bore large tenor with an 8.5" yellow brass one-piece bell and a standard rotor valve in the classic open wrap configuration. The handslide is in proper alignment and plays smoothly. Valve response is excellent. Cosmetically, it shows honest wear, but functionally, it is gig-ready and needs no further service.

If you’ve been searching for a true pro-level Bach 42B at an approachable price point, this is a standout candidate. Perfect for advancing students, working musicians, or anyone seeking the vintage Bach sound for under $2,000.

Includes the original case, which is still functional but has a worn handle that may need repair or replacement. Case substitution is available—contact us for options.

What makes the Bach 42B a top choice for orchestral players?
The Bach 42B has long been a standard in symphonic and band settings. With its .547 bore and large yellow brass bell, it offers a warm, powerful tone and excellent projection. This model has been a first-call choice for professional tenor trombonists since the 1970s.

Is lacquer wear on vintage Bach trombones a concern?
Lacquer loss is common on Bach horns from the 1960s to 1980s and is usually cosmetic. This example has no structural issues or corrosion, and the wear does not impact performance. Many players even prefer the resonance of aged, thinner lacquer.

How does this horn compare to a modern Bach 42B?
Many players feel that older Bach 42Bs have a more resonant tone and better craftsmanship than modern versions. While new models retail for over $3,900, vintage examples like this offer great value and tone at a significantly lower price.
