Overview

This is a factory-new S.E. Shires Boston-made Custom Series TW47 tenor trombone handslide, built to Shires’ current production specifications and offered here new and in stock.

The slide features standard-weight yellow brass outer tubes, a nickel silver endcrook, and is delivered in unplayed condition, aside from factory testing. It includes the full 5-year S.E. Shires factory warranty and is ready for immediate installation.

This TW47 handslide is an excellent choice for players building a modular Shires custom tenor setup, or as a direct replacement slide for an existing Shires instrument.

Construction & Included Leadpipes

This TW47 handslide includes three removable brass leadpipes:

  • #1.5

  • #2 (standard length)

  • #2L (long)

The #2L leadpipe is approximately 1 inch longer than the standard #2, measuring roughly 9.75" versus 8.75". This additional length can provide greater focus, stability, and resistance, particularly at higher dynamic levels (ff–fff).
A visual comparison with measurement reference is shown in the images for clarity.

Because Shires slides are fully modular, players can experiment with leadpipe length and taper to find the response and feel that best suits their playing style.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the Shires slide model numbers mean?

  • T = Tenor

  • W = Wide slide spacing (similar to Bach)

  • 47 = .547 bore

Examples:

  • TW47 — Tenor, Wide, .547 bore (this listing)

  • T47 — Tenor, .547 bore, narrower slide width (Conn 88H spacing)

What materials are used on Shires slides?

  • Outer tubes: Yellow brass or gold brass (G)

  • Endcrooks: Nickel silver, yellow brass (YC), or gold brass (GC)

  • Nickel silver (N) slides: Available in standard or lightweight builds

Lightweight (LW) slides use brass outer tubes without nickel oversleeves in first and second position.

What are common Shires TW47 slide variants?

Why would a player choose a longer leadpipe (2L)?

Some players prefer a longer leadpipe for increased stability, focus, and resistance, especially when playing at louder dynamic levels (ff–fff). Others prefer the quicker response of a standard-length leadpipe. Shires’ modular system allows players to experiment and choose what feels best.
