The TGX features gold brass tubing with the X taper design. The X taper was developed to pair especially well with Type II tenor bells and fully assembled models such as the Vintage New York (VNY) and Chicago (CH). On these bells, the TGX tuning slide maximizes resonance and brings out the tonal character these instruments were designed for.
That said, fitment is universal across the Shires Custom Series system, including both .525 medium-large bore and .547 large bore tenor trombones. Many players also choose to use X taper slides on other bell models, and the results come down to individual preference.
With its gold brass construction, the TGX provides a tonal palette that is warmer and richer compared to yellow brass. It adds depth and breadth to the sound, giving orchestral and ensemble players a rounder timbre that blends beautifully while still projecting with authority.
