SHIRES

Overview

This S.E. Shires TBQ36YR bass trombone was a clean pre-owned instrument from a long-time professional orchestra player and Brass Exchange customer. The horn had never been damaged or repaired and played beautifully at the time of sale.

The setup included a 9.5″ yellow brass bell paired with a standard .562 straight bore handslide and one #2 leadpipe. Several years ago, we added a custom Shires thumb rest bar for improved ergonomics. The valves were quick and quiet, and the handslide was smooth and responsive.

Cosmetically, there were a few small areas of lacquer loss on the tuning slide and outer handslide tubes—typical wear that did not affect playability. Overall the horn presented very well and performed exactly as players expect from a professional Shires bass trombone.

A comparable new TBQ36YR build in 2025 is approaching the $4,800–$5,000 range depending on options, making clean used examples like this especially desirable.

Player Perspective

The TBQ36YR is one of the most popular Shires bass trombone configurations. The yellow brass bell provides clarity and projection, while the .562 slide and Shires valve system give the player a broad, stable orchestral sound.

This type of setup works equally well for symphonic playing, wind ensemble, and studio work. Many players choose TBQ models as a dependable professional bass trombone that balances warmth, clarity, and response.

The Brass Exchange has been an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since before the Eastman acquisition, and we’ve helped hundreds of players match Shires bells, slides, valves, and leadpipes into balanced professional setups.
