This Shires straight neck tenor conversion is a custom-series part, built at the Boston factory in 2024 and offered here as unused new stock. It is designed for large-bore Shires tenors with detachable valve sections, providing a professional way to convert a horn into a straight tenor configuration.
Installation is simple: remove the tuning slide and F-attachment valve section from your Shires bell, then install this neckpipe in its place. The component is built to fit seamlessly with current and past Boston-made Shires bells such as the Vintage New York models, Ralph Sauer detachable flare tenor, Vintage Elkhart-style tenors, or any other custom Shires large-bore F-trigger setup. It is also fully compatible with Q Series models, including the Q30 tenor.
Please note that this part is not compatible with small-bore Shires tenors. Small-bore models have soldered-in-place cross braces and fixed neckpipes that are not designed for removable conversion parts.
One of the standout features of this neckpipe is the thoughtfully placed thumb bar. Positioned where a valve lever would normally rest, the bar provides a natural feel and optimizes ergonomics for the left hand while playing. This makes rehearsals and performances more comfortable, maintaining proper balance and control without compromise.
For players who want flexibility, the Shires straight neck tenor conversion allows you to create a lighter, freer-blowing instrument without permanently altering your bell. Whether for chamber music, small ensemble work, or personal preference, this component preserves the full quality and craftsmanship of Boston-made Shires parts.
