The S.E. Shires Q30GR is one of the most popular models in the Shires Q-Series, offering true professional performance and long-term modular flexibility at a competitive price point within the Shires lineup.
This instrument represents current 2026 production, built to modern Shires specifications and supported by the full Shires factory warranty. The Brass Exchange has been an Authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since 2012, supporting players nationwide with expert guidance on Shires instruments, configurations, and upgrade paths.
β¦ Design Overview
At the heart of the Q30GR is an 8.5β³ gold-brass bell with elegant Shires floral engraving.
Gold brass, with its higher copper content, produces a warmer, darker tonal color than yellow brass β favored by players seeking a rounder sound that blends easily in orchestral, wind-ensemble, church, and chamber settings.
The horn is equipped with a classic open-wrap rotor valve, offering the traditional feel and balanced resistance many players prefer for stability and centered response.
(For players who favor a more open, free-blowing feel, Shires also offers axial-flow [Thayer-type] valve options in other models, which can be discussed separately.)
β¦ Slide & Modularity
The included TW47 Q-Series handslide features a .547β³ large-bore design with nickel-silver outer tubes and ships with three removable leadpipes.
The slide is fully compatible with Shires Custom-Series leadpipes, allowing players to experiment with:
brass
gold brass
nickel silver
sterling silver
in standard or long tapers to fine-tune response and tonal color as their playing evolves.

β Questions Trombone Players Often Ask
What difference does the gold-brass bell make compared to yellow brass?
Gold brass produces a warmer, broader tone with a softer edge, making it especially effective for blending in orchestral and large-ensemble contexts. Yellow brass offers a brighter core and more immediate projection, often favored in solo or commercial settings.
Rotor vs. axial-flow valve β which is better?
The rotor valve provides a traditional feel with slight resistance that aids stability and centering. Axial-flow valves offer a more open blow and smoother low-register response. Both use the same interface standard and can be interchanged in future upgrades.
Are Q-Series parts compatible with Custom-Series components?
Yes. The Q-Series uses the same connection standards as the Shires Custom Series, allowing bells, slides, valves, tuning slides, and leadpipes to be swapped or upgraded over time.
Who is the Q30GR best suited for?
The Q30GR is an ideal first professional-level tenor for advanced high-school or college players and a dependable long-term instrument for educators and working musicians who prefer the classic rotor-valve sound paired with gold-brass warmth.
π Considering a Trade-In?
Have another trombone or brass instrument youβre no longer playing?
We regularly accept trade-ins toward Shires instruments, including student, intermediate, and professional trombones β as well as select trumpets and euphoniums.
Trading in can be a smart way to reduce out-of-pocket cost while putting an unused instrument back into circulation.
