This S.E. Shires Custom 7YLW-7.5 is a top-tier professional small bore jazz/lead trombone that impressed us from the first note. It features a .500 bore lightweight T00LW brass handslide with nickel silver end crook, a 7.5" yellow brass lightweight 7YLW bell, and a yellow brass tuning slide — a combination that delivers a lively, focused tone with remarkable projection. Two removable leadpipes were included, offering players additional flexibility to tailor response and resistance to their preference.
Condition was superb throughout, with no mechanical issues or cosmetic damage of note. The handslide was exceptionally fast, smooth, and perfectly aligned, requiring no additional service. The horn responded effortlessly, producing a surprisingly full and colorful sound for its size, and the slightly larger 7.5" bell gave it extra breadth and resonance without losing agility or brilliance.
While the .500 bore might suggest a strictly lead or commercial application, this horn played far more versatile than expected. It would have been equally at home in big band lead, commercial, studio, or pit settings, and also made an ideal option for college players who already use Shires modular equipment but need a dedicated small bore instrument.
