SHIRES

This S.E. Shires Custom Series inline independent bass trombone valve section came through our shop from a well-known former Shires employee — a Boston-era piece built before the Eastman acquisition. It has since been sold and now appears in our Archive of Sold Instruments & Parts to support players researching Shires modular components, used value, and generational production traits.

This valve section features the standard Bb/F/Gb/D tuning configuration with Shires' classic independent rotor layout. Boston-era components like this are increasingly sought after for their build quality, consistency, and handmade character. Many players prefer these early Custom Series valve blocks for their feel, predictable resistance profile, and tonal breadth.

Condition & Shop Service

This valve section received full workshop service here at The Brass Exchange, including:

  • Chemical bath & internal cleaning

  • Rotor inspection and alignment

  • Bearing & linkage evaluation

  • Compression check and leak assessment

  • Exterior cleaning and finish preservation

The lacquered brush-satin finish remains attractive and consistent throughout. Mechanically, the rotors moved quickly, quietly, and with proper symmetry between levers. The valve section showed no dents, no damage history, and no signs of prior repair.

A new Custom Series Shires independent valve section retails around $3,200–$3,475 (2025), with long waitlists and limited availability. Clean pre-owned examples—especially Boston-era builds—are becoming much harder to source.

Modular Fit & Compatibility

This valve section is compatible with:

  • All Shires Custom Series bass bells

  • Q Series bells with standard Shires taper

  • Any Shires bass tuning slide (standard taper)

  • Any Shires bass handslide (dual bore or straight .562)

Backward compatibility is one of Shires' greatest strengths, and components like this remain fully usable across more than two decades of production.

Used Value & Seller Considerations

We continue to see strong demand for Boston-era Shires parts, particularly valve sections. Many players contact us as they:

  • Transition to lighter setups

  • Move from axial to rotary or vice versa

  • Sell unused components after school or ensemble changes

  • Seek valuation or trade options during upgrades

Valve sections retain their value exceptionally well when mechanically clean and undamaged.

If you're considering selling a Shires valve section or other component, we offer:

  • Expert appraisal

  • Fair purchase and trade-in options

  • High-visibility consignment placement

  • Setup-matching guidance for your next configuration

Player Notes

This valve section played exactly as expected from a Boston-era Custom build:

  • Smooth, even resistance

  • Excellent rotor balance

  • Broad, colorful bass voice

  • Easy low-register depth

  • Stable blow in either dependent or independent usage

The feel aligns closely with early Still-era production — highly responsive, predictable, and reliable across the pitch spectrum.

FAQs

What does “Boston era” mean for Shires components?
It refers to instruments built at the original Shires facility before the move under Eastman ownership. Many players value these for their handmade consistency and tonal character.

Is this valve section compatible with Q Series bells?
Yes. As long as the bell uses standard Shires receivers, compatibility is maintained.

How does an independent valve system differ from a dependent system?
Independent valves allow Gb/D use regardless of F engagement, offering added flexibility in alternate positions and low-register options.

Does finish wear affect performance?
Cosmetic lacquer changes do not impact mechanical or acoustic performance. Valve integrity and compression matter far more for value and playability.
