SHIRES

Overview

This S.E. Shires Custom Series alto trombone with T.I.S. (Tuning-in-Slide) design, serial number 8952, is a Boston-built example that has seen very little playing time and remains in excellent condition. The lacquer and engraving are beautiful, all parts are original, and the instrument shows almost no signs of prior use.

The setup includes an A85-95 dual-bore yellow brass T.I.S. handslide with nickel-silver end crook, two removable leadpipes, and an A7YLW yellow brass bell. The leather handgrip is included and can be removed upon request. This alto does not include a case.

Shires Custom Series altos are not common on the used market, especially in this condition, and this instrument represents a strong option for players seeking a high-level orchestral alto trombone with modular flexibility.

Player Perspective

From a professional player’s standpoint, the Shires Custom T.I.S. alto offers a centered orchestral sound with excellent clarity and control. The tuning-in-slide design allows subtle adjustments in response and balance, and the dual-bore slide keeps articulation clean while maintaining warmth.

Players preparing orchestral auditions or working in principal roles often look for altos that blend easily with modern section sounds while still projecting clearly. This Shires setup does that well, with a tone profile that sits comfortably alongside Bach or Conn altos while keeping the unmistakable Shires clarity.
