SHIRES

Overview

This S.E. Shires Q36YR bass trombone is a super-mint pre-owned example from a single owner, approximately 2–3 years old, and remains in outstanding playing and cosmetic condition. The lacquer is excellent, all components are original, and the horn shows almost no signs of prior use.

The setup includes a 9½-inch yellow brass bell, standard-weight .562 handslide, independent Bb/F/Gb/D valve configuration, three removable leadpipes, and original mouthpiece. The extra leadpipes and mouthpiece remain unused in their original wrapping. The Q-Series backpack-style case is also exceptionally clean.

The instrument has been inspected and plays exactly as it should, with smooth slide action, proper valve response, and strong compression. No defects, dents, or structural issues were noted.

As an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since before the Eastman acquisition, we’ve worked with many Q36 bass trombones, and this model continues to be one of the most reliable modern orchestral bass trombones available.

Player Perspective

From a professional player’s standpoint, the Q36YR offers a centered, broad orchestral bass trombone sound with dependable intonation and secure low-range response. The independent valve setup allows full chromatic flexibility, and the Shires modular design gives players options for future customization.

Many advancing bass trombone players choose the Q36 platform because it blends well in section playing while still providing the power and clarity needed for symphonic literature. In this condition, this instrument represents a near-new playing experience without the uncertainty that sometimes comes with older used horns.
