SHIRES

This is a pre-owned S.E. Shires 1YM large bore tenor bell section, approximately 10 years old. Fully compatible with all S.E. Shires Custom Series components as well as Q Series parts using .547 bore valve sections or straight neckpipe conversions.

Originally unlacquered with natural oxidation, this bell has now been professionally buffed to a high-polished brass finish here at The Brass Exchange. It remains unlacquered, giving players the open, vibrant feel many prefer, but now with the look of a brand-new bell. Over time, unlacquered bells naturally develop a patina, but many choose to maintain a polished finish for a clean, bright appearance.

Do unlacquered brass instruments play better than lacquered ones?
Many players believe they do—and this bell is a great example. Without the thin lacquer layer, the bell can respond more freely and project with greater resonance.

Can a brass bell be “trained” by a great player?
Absolutely. When high-level professionals play with excellent pitch and resonance over time, the bell alloy can develop a “memory” and become more responsive. This bell was broken in by a seasoned orchestral player and is now ready for its next chapter.

There are no dents, dings, or signs of repair. Structurally perfect, freshly polished, and visually stunning. A brand-new 1YM bell from the factory sells for over $1,500 (2025 pricing).

Save now and enjoy the benefits of a fully played-in, pro-level Shires bell section with a like-new appearance.
