SHIRES

This S.E. Shires “X” tenor tuning slide was a Boston-made shop demo in excellent playing condition, showing only a few light handling scratches on the cross brace. Built from yellow brass with nickel silver trim, it was designed as a precision component for Shires trombones, fully compatible with both the Custom Series and Q Series modular systems.

The “X” taper offers a different airflow and resistance profile compared to the TY slide. Whereas the TY model has a more gradual transition, the X taper narrows more quickly from bell side to valve side. This subtle change creates a freer, more open response, making it a popular option for players seeking flexibility and resonance.

Shires originally offered this taper under the designation “B taper,” later refined and reintroduced as the X model. Today, it remains a favored choice for pairing with Type II bell tapers, including the Vintage New York TII5VNY bell, which is designed to be used with the X slide.

As with all Shires components, this tuning slide is part of the modular Custom Shop design, allowing musicians to tailor sound and feel with remarkable precision.

The Brass Exchange is proud to be an Authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop, providing access to Boston-made Custom Series components that are unavailable through standard Shires dealers (who are limited to Q Series instruments).

This “X” tenor tuning slide has since been sold and is preserved here in our Archive of Sold Instruments & Components for players researching Shires modular setups.
