Overview

The S.E. Shires Q36YR bass trombone remains one of the most popular professional-level bass trombones in the Shires Q Series lineup. It features a 9.5″ yellow brass bell, inline independent rotors, and a standard .562 bore handslide, producing a clear, centered orchestral sound with excellent response and projection.

This instrument is offered here as a Certified Open Box showroom demo, meaning it has been removed from the factory packaging and played in our shop for customer evaluation. It remains in excellent condition and includes the full S.E. Shires factory warranty.

Each Q36YR includes:

• Three removable Shires leadpipes
• Backpack-style hard case
• Shires mouthpiece
• Maintenance accessories
• Full factory warranty

All Q Series components are compatible with Shires Custom Series parts, allowing players to upgrade bells, slides, tuning slides, or valve sections over time. Many players start with a Q36YR and later refine their setup as their playing evolves.

This instrument has been inspected and prepared here in our shop before shipment.

Player Perspective

The Q36YR is a terrific all-around bass trombone for advanced high-school players, college students, educators, and working professionals. The yellow brass bell keeps articulation clear while still giving plenty of weight in the low register, and the inline independent rotor system is smooth and reliable.

Because Q Series components share compatibility with Custom Shires parts, this horn is often the smartest entry into the Shires ecosystem. You can play it for years as-is, then upgrade components when you’re ready.

At The Brass Exchange, we’ve been an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since 2012, helping hundreds of players configure Shires modular instruments and components. We’re always happy to talk through setup options and make sure the horn fits your goals.

Updated Ergonomic Thumb Rest

Current production S.E. Shires Q36YR bass trombones now include the factory-installed adjustable ergonomic thumb rest bar. Early Q-Series bass trombones did not offer this feature, but it has become standard on modern builds because players consistently prefer the improved hand position and comfort.

The thumb rest bar itself can be removed with a small Allen wrench if a player prefers a minimalist setup, but the mounting saddle is brazed permanently to the valve section for strength and stability.

Q36YR vs Custom Shires Bass Trombone

Q36YR: Complete professional bass trombone at excellent value
Custom Shires Bass: Fully modular build tailored to player
Used Custom Shires: Premium components at lower cost

We help players compare all three paths every week.
