RATH

✦ Historical Perspective

The Rath R10 is a professional small-bore jazz tenor trombone designed and built in England by Michael Rath. Introduced in the early 2000s, the R10 quickly became known among jazz and commercial players for its precision craftsmanship, responsive slide design, and flexible tonal palette.

This example features a 7.5" bell paired with a .500 bore handslide, a classic configuration for lead and commercial playing. Instruments in this size range are often favored for their quick articulation, brilliant projection, and ability to cut clearly through a big band or commercial ensemble.

One particularly notable feature on this instrument is the custom silver-plated finish, which gives the horn a striking appearance while also contributing to a slightly more focused and immediate response compared with lacquer finishes.

This instrument also included two interchangeable leadpipes, allowing the player to adjust the instrument’s feel and resistance. The long nickel silver leadpipe provides a more open response, while the standard brass leadpipe offers a slightly more centered feel.

With its low early serial number and exceptional build quality, this Rath R10 represented an outstanding example of Rath’s early custom small-bore production.

Condition on this instrument was exceptional. The horn showed no structural damage, repairs, or mechanical concerns, and the handslide was smooth, fast, and highly responsive. The instrument played evenly across the entire range with excellent vibrance and color, making it well suited for jazz, commercial, and studio work.

Today we use a refined lighting and background system designed for fine-art photography of brass instruments, but these earlier photos still document many remarkable instruments that have passed through our shop.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask

What is a Rath R10 trombone?

The Rath R10 is a professional .500 bore small-bore tenor trombone designed primarily for jazz, lead, and commercial playing. It offers quick response, excellent projection, and a highly flexible tonal palette.

Why do many jazz players prefer a .500 bore trombone?

A .500 bore slide allows for faster response and clearer articulation, which is particularly useful for lead playing and commercial styles. These instruments often produce a brilliant sound that carries well in big band settings.

Do interchangeable leadpipes make a difference?

Yes. Leadpipes can change how resistant or open an instrument feels. Many professional players experiment with different leadpipes to find the response that best matches their mouthpiece and playing style.
