This is the original model Yamaha Silent Brass system for trombone, including the mute, electronics module, wires, and original box with manual and paperwork. Compared to the newer design, this earlier version is larger, slightly heavier, and produces a highly muted, whisper-like sound level—ideal for private practice settings.
This example came from a long-time player and customer who recently retired from playing. It has been well maintained and remains in full working condition. The mute fits a wide range of bell sizes, including small bore horns like the Conn 6H or King 3B, as well as large bore tenors and bass trombones.
Unlike some marketing claims, it's important to note: the Silent Brass does not reproduce the natural tone or feel of the instrument. The increased resistance alters airflow and can lead to embouchure fatigue with extended use. However, this resistance is precisely what makes the system valuable as a training tool—supporting development of air control, embouchure strength, and internal sound focus. Many players use the mute without the electronics, and some find that wearing earplugs enhances the experience, helping to center the sound internally while maintaining a relaxed embouchure.
Newer Yamaha Silent Brass systems retail for over $300 new. This original version, complete with all components and packaging, offers a cost-effective way to add structured, quiet practice to your routine.
