Historical Perspective – The 1970s Olds S-24G

The Olds S-24G stands as one of the most recognizable American-made bass trombones of the 1970s. With its independent F/Gβ™/D valve configuration, gold brass bell, and nickel-silver wrap, this design became a staple for schools, advancing students, and working players seeking a durable, resonant bass instrument at a time when boutique makers were scarce.

The hallmark of this example is its fully rebuilt handslide, completed by Getzen using the original bracing, inner and outer tubes, and original end crook. The rebuild brought the slide back to modern performance standards while preserving the horn’s authenticity.

The bell section received dent work and valve service, restoring excellent structural condition with no remaining issues affecting playability. The bell shows moderate lacquer wear typical of instruments from this era, while the newly rebuilt slide carries fresh lacquer.

During its time here, the S-24G underwent complete reconditioning and arrived with no functional problems. Tonally, this model is known for a warm, broad, and forgiving sound, making it an ideal first bass trombone or a reliable American-made option for band programs.

Included is an Edwards #2 bass leadpipe, a highly regarded upgrade that improves focus, articulation, and low-register response when paired with vintage Olds valve blocks.
