KING

πŸ”Ž Historical Perspective

This King Silvertone Trombone, serial number 206576, was produced around 1939–1940 and represents one of the classic pre-war small-bore King designs. Built to the same basic size as the famous King 2B, the Silvertone shares the familiar dual-bore slide proportions but features a standard-weight brass slide and a stunning 7.25" sterling silver bell with gold-plated inner flare.

The bell flare on this example remains unlacquered sterling silver, giving it that unmistakable King brilliance and projection, while the gooseneck and tuning slide have been professionally relacquered. All other parts appear original, and the instrument shows no evidence of prior trauma or major repair. Structurally it is straight and remains a solid playing example of this important King model.

From a player’s perspective, sterling silver bells require a bit more energy to fully resonate at 100%, but once mastered the tonal energy is enormous and cannot be rivaled by a traditional brass trombone. This Silvertone delivers a sweet, centered King tone with surprising power at louder dynamics, making it ideal for lead jazz, small group work, or section playing where clarity and presence matter.

These pre-war King Silvertones remain both collectible and highly usable working instruments. This one included a new case and was ready to serve another generation of players, offering both historical value and real musical utility.

πŸ“· Older Photography Note

Some photos on this archive listing come from the early years of The Brass Exchange, before our current fine-art photography of brass instruments workflow was fully developed. They reflect the evolution of our studio methods, lighting techniques, and approach to how to photograph musical instruments for accurate color and detail.

We preserve these original images intentionally as part of the historical record of both the instrument and our shop. While newer listings feature our Nikon Z-series studio photography with calibrated lighting and Image SEO Gold Protocol standards, these earlier photos remain valuable for documenting rare instruments like this vintage King Silvertone
