KING

Overview

This early-1960s King 3B Silversonic tenor trombone, serial number 386209, has now been sold and is preserved here as part of The Brass Exchange Archive of Sold instruments. Cleveland-era 3BSS models are closely associated with jazz greats such as J. J. Johnson and remain among the most respected small-bore jazz trombones ever produced.

This example featured an 8" sterling-silver bell with gold-plated inner bell, original lacquer on the outer bell, and matching original parts throughout, with no evidence of major repairs or trauma. Instruments from this Cleveland period are often valued for their build quality — earlier alloy formulations, solder techniques, and bell metallurgy give these horns a slightly heavier feel and a tone that blends shimmer with a centered core.

The slide was very good with straight tubes and proper alignment, and the bell spoke with the unmistakable Cleveland-era response: immediate clarity, fast articulation, and the classic Silversonic character that has defined King jazz trombones for decades.

📚 Historical Perspective

Early-1960s Cleveland-built King 3B Silversonics remain highly desirable to players and collectors because they represent a transitional period before later Eastlake-era production changes. The sterling-silver bell paired with a lightweight nickel-silver slide creates a balance of speed and tonal density that many jazz players still seek today.

Examples that remain original and structurally sound — especially with preserved lacquer and matching components — are increasingly difficult to find. For that reason, these horns often serve both as serious gigging instruments and as historical reference pieces documenting King’s classic Cleveland manufacturing period.
