✦ Instrument Overview
This King 3B Silversonic, serial number 578221, was built in the mid-1970s and remains one of the finest examples of this legendary model to pass through our shop. Featuring a sterling silver 8-inch bell with 24K gold-plated interior, it delivers that unmistakable King brilliance—smooth, vibrant, and full of projection.
The .508-bore nickel-silver handslide with yellow brass end crook offers fast, responsive action, ideal for lead and solo playing. We completed a full shop service, including a chemical bath, internal cleaning, slide alignment, and mechanical inspection. The slide tubes are exceptionally straight with perfect compression and no plating issues—this horn plays fast and open right out of the case.
Notably, this particular bell feels slightly lighter than many Silversonics from the same era, giving it an even freer, more effortless response across the range. It’s a true “player’s horn,” equally suited for professional jazz work or an advanced student pursuing that authentic King tone.
Includes an original early-make black/silver coffin-style case from the 1960s, fully functional and in good shape for its age.
✦ Modern Context
King still manufactures a replica of the 3B Silversonic today, with a current retail price as of 2025 exceeding $5000 USD. While the modern versions capture the look, many players agree that the vintage models from the 1960s–70s play with greater resonance and character, thanks to the original Cleveland- and Eastlake-era craftsmanship.
After handling and testing more than 100 Silversonics over the years, we can confidently say this mid-’70s example stands among the very best. No service work is needed to improve playability—it’s ready to perform as-is.
✅ FAQ
Q: What makes the Silversonic bell different?
A: The sterling silver bell with gold-plated interior produces unmatched tonal energy—brilliant yet warm—with immense projection. It requires more breath control to fully resonate, but rewards the player with incredible tonal power once mastered.
Q: How does this 3B compare to later King production?
A: The 1970s Eastlake horns maintained H.N. White’s design standards before corporate cost reductions began in later decades. Most players find the earlier examples more responsive and livelier.
Q: Is this horn gig-ready?
A: Yes. It’s been fully serviced and needs no mechanical work. Slide action is smooth, valve alignment perfect, and the horn speaks easily across registers.
