KING

The King 3B Silversonic has long been considered one of the finest jazz trombones ever produced, and this 1960 example, serial number 373685, captures the excellence of the H.N. White era at its peak. Featuring its original parts and lacquer, this trombone has been beautifully preserved and remains a fully functional professional instrument more than 60 years after it was built.

The horn is distinguished by its 8" sterling silver bell with gold-plated inner bell, paired with a .508 bore nickel silver slide and yellow brass end crook. The combination of sterling silver and gold plating not only gives the instrument a striking appearance but also enhances the tonal palette, producing a sound that is vibrant, colorful, and uniquely “Silversonic.”

This trombone came through our shop for a full professional service, including a chemical bath and inspection. It is free of dents or dings, and the handslide is exceptionally smooth, free of defects, and without any tension—exactly what players hope for in a vintage 3B. The horn plays easily, with the responsive feel and brilliance that has made the 3B a favorite among jazz soloists and lead players for decades.

Over the years, we have observed that early 3B models such as this one feature design details that differ slightly from modern reproductions. The tuning slide crook is slightly longer, and the inner slide tubes use a heavier gauge alloy compared to the lightweight construction of today’s models. These subtle differences give the vintage horns a feel and resonance that many players continue to prefer.

For comparison, a new King 3B Legend Silversonic retails around $4,787 today—and that does not include the gold-plated inner bell found on this original. Modern versions are built as replicas of classics like this 1960 instrument, but owning an authentic H.N. White-era 3B Silversonic is a chance to play and preserve a true piece of trombone history.

Includes the original coffin-style case.
