KING

Overview

This early 1955 H.N. White Cleveland-era King 3B is among the earliest examples of the model we have encountered. Instruments from this period are highly regarded because they established the classic King 3B sound that later generations tried to copy.

The trombone appears to retain all original parts. The handslide still shows its original lacquer and received fresh alignment and setup here in the shop. The bell section shows no history of damage or creasing. Lacquer appears original though not confirmed with certainty, but the horn presents beautifully and plays exceptionally well.

One particularly interesting detail on this example is the original tuning-slide design. Early Cleveland-era 3B trombones used a longer brass tuning-slide crook. Many professional players prefer this early design because it allows playing comfortably at modern A = 440 pitch without pulling the slide as far, giving a slightly different feel and response compared to later models.

The tuning slide on this horn also includes a crook guard brace rarely seen on early Kings, possibly a factory variation or prototype detail. The instrument received a full chemical bath and inspection with no dents or repairs required.

Original black/red leather coffin case is included.

For both collectors and serious players, early H.N. White 3B trombones remain some of the finest medium-bore jazz and studio horns ever built.

📸 Photography From Our Early Archive

These photos come from the earlier years of The Brass Exchange and reflect how our instrument photography has evolved over time. While equipment and lighting have improved, our goal has always been the same: clear, honest images that help musicians evaluate instruments remotely with confidence.

🏛️ Historical Perspective

The King 3B became one of the most popular jazz and commercial trombones ever made because of its balance of clarity, projection, and flexibility. Early Cleveland-era examples like this 1955 model are especially valued for their build quality and classic tonal character.

Many players believe later King 3B models were patterned after these early horns, but subtle differences in materials and design give the originals their distinctive feel.
