π Historical Perspective
The King 2BL Jiggs Whigham model represents a modern evolution of the classic King 2B jazz trombone lineage. Built in Eastlake, Ohio, this model honors the playing style and tonal clarity associated with legendary jazz artist Jiggs Whigham, whose work helped popularize the lightweight small-bore King sound among lead and solo players.
While the traditional King 2B uses a dual-bore slide, the 2BL features a straight .491 bore, giving it a slightly more centered response and nimble articulation. The lightweight build, 7 3/8" yellow brass bell, and classic trumpet-style water key combine for a responsive instrument that speaks quickly in jazz band, pit orchestra, or combo settings.
This example came to us in excellent playing condition, with a truly outstanding handslide β one of those rare slides that simply feels effortless. Structurally the instrument is straight, with a small cosmetic scuff and ding around the 3-oβclock position on the outer bell, likely from a dropped mouthpiece. This is minor shop work and will be corrected before delivery.
Included is a modern King carbon fiber backpack case, ideal for campus or gig travel, along with a mouthpiece. For players wanting the feel of a professional small-bore jazz horn without paying new-retail prices over $3,000, this was an outstanding option.
β Common Questions
What is the difference between a King 2B and a 2BL trombone?
A standard 2B has a dual-bore slide. The 2BL uses a straight .491 bore, offering a slightly tighter response and very quick articulation, especially attractive to lead players.
Is the 2BL good for jazz and lead playing?
Yes. Its lightweight design, fast slide, and focused tone make it ideal for jazz band lead work, solo playing, and commercial music settings.
Is an Eastlake-built King still a professional instrument?
Absolutely. Modern Eastlake Kings maintain the classic King feel and are widely used by working musicians and students alike.
