The Brass Exchange has curated hundreds of vintage King Silversonic and early Silvertone trombones over the past 15 years, and this example β€” serial number 294965 β€” comes from one of the most fascinating periods in American musical history.

Built shortly after World War II, this horn sits at the heart of the Big Band era, when orchestras led by Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, and other legendary bandleaders defined the sound of the β€œGreatest Generation.” It’s easy to imagine the original owner inspired by dance halls, radio broadcasts, and jazz clubs that shaped mid-century American culture.

During these years, King’s earliest sterling-silver-bell trombones carried the name Silvertone, a designation used only briefly before shifting to the now-famous Silversonic branding. Instruments from this late-1940s transitional window show some of King’s finest craftsmanship: sterling silver bells with detailed engraving, distinctive early stems, and the lively response that made the 2B the definitive lead jazz trombone of its era.

Player Perspective

This Silvertone came from the collection of a top-call Los Angeles professional β€” a player who knew exactly what a great vintage 2B should feel like. While the full ownership history is unknown, the horn itself tells the story of careful long-term use and preservation.

The sterling silver bell remains undamaged with crisp engraving and proper alignment. Our shop completed a full cleaning and careful silver polish to restore the brilliance of the bell while preserving its original character. Lacquered brass components retain their original finish with natural aging from more than 75 years of life.

Because early King 2B thread specifications remained consistent, the bell section is fully compatible with later King 2B slides. Many players enjoy pairing a historic sterling bell with a modern or optimized slide for an exceptional playing setup.

The original blonde tweed coffin-style case is included and remains structurally sound.

Historical & Collector Notes

Early King 2B trombones from the 1930s and 1940s often carried serial numbers stamped in multiple locations β€” a level of manufacturing care that later became less common.

This example carries matching serial numbers in four locations:

β€’ Lower outer slide tube below hand brace
β€’ Back of slide cork barrel
β€’ Bell section receiver above threaded connection
β€’ Tuning slide brace

Matching numbers are a strong indicator of originality and are highly valued by collectors evaluating early King instruments.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask

Why are early King Silvertone trombones important?
Silvertone models were King’s earliest sterling-silver-bell trombones before the Silversonic name was adopted. These late-1940s horns are prized for fast response, detailed engraving, and the brilliant lead-trombone sound heard on classic recordings.

Are vintage 2B Silvertones still useful for modern jazz playing?
Yes. Many modern lead players love the clarity and articulation of early 2B designs. A well-set-up Silvertone with an original sterling bell offers character that modern horns often cannot match.

Will this bell fit later King 2B slides?
Yes. King maintained consistent thread patterns. This bell section will fit later King 2B slides, giving players flexibility for different setups.
