π Historical Perspective
This King 2B Silversonic Trombone, serial number 327824, was built in 1953 during the H.N. White Cleveland era and represents one of the most iconic jazz lead trombone designs ever produced. It features the traditional dual-bore handslide paired with a 7.5" sterling silver bellβhallmarks of the classic 2B Silversonic configuration.
This example remained exceptionally straight and clean with no structural defects. It had received careful restoration work including a hand-polished silver bell and re-lacquered neck, tuning slide, and handslide end crook. The slide action was excellent with strong alignment and smooth response.
Many players over the years have preferred unlacquered sterling silver bells on King Silversonic models because they slightly lighten the feel and increase responsiveness. From a pro playerβs perspective, sterling silver bells require more energy to fully resonate at 100%, but once mastered the tonal energy is enormous and cannot be rivaled by a traditional brass trombone. The result is a clear, projecting sound ideal for big band lead or solo jazz playing.
Examples like this help illustrate why the King 2B Silversonic became a benchmark instrument for generations of jazz trombonists and remains highly sought after by collectors and working players alike. It included a new Gator case.
The Brass Exchange has been serving brass players and collectors since 2010, preserving historically important instruments and helping musicians evaluate, trade, and consign vintage brass.
