KING

This King 2B Liberty dates to 1950 during the H.N. White eraโ€”a golden time for jazz and big band music. Featuring all original parts and lacquer, this horn is a prime example of classic American craftsmanship. The 2B Liberty was famously associated with Tommy Dorsey and became one of the most recognized jazz trombones of its time.

This example includes the lightweight nickel silver dual bore (.481"/.491") handslide, a signature of the 2B line, paired with a standard yellow brass 2B bell. The slide features the original fancy water key and remains in excellent playing condition with straight inner and outer tubes and no plating loss. Matching serial numbers are present on the tuning slide, neck receiver, handslide tenon, and lower outer slideโ€”confirming that the components are original and have remained together since factory assembly.

The original lacquer has aged gracefully to a deep golden brown, adding visual character and historical patina. This trombone has never undergone major repairs or sustained structural damage. It plays cleanly and easily, with the kind of vibrant core sound that has kept the 2B in demand for over 70 years.

Full shop service has been performed, including chemical bath, slide service, and inspection. A fantastic option for serious players looking for a lead horn with personality, or for collectors of early H.N. White jazz instruments.

Case and mouthpiece not included with this listing.

Why is the King 2B Liberty considered such a legendary jazz trombone?
The 2B Liberty was endorsed by leading jazz trombonists including Tommy Dorsey. Its lightweight build, fast response, and brilliant tone made it the go-to horn for lead players in the swing eraโ€”and it remains popular with modern players looking for that classic sound. Is this trombone suitable for professional use today?
Absolutely. Despite its vintage, this 2B plays with excellent clarity and response. The slide condition and overall resonance make it suitable for live performance, studio recording, and ensemble work.

What differentiates this H.N. White era model from later 2Bs?
Horns built under the H.N. White label before the 1965 transition to Eastlake, Ohio are typically regarded as more finely crafted, with better slide tubing, lacquer, and attention to detail. Matching serial numbers across components are another sign of factory-original condition.
