This is an original Greenhoe Conn 88H trombone, hand-built by Gary Greenhoe in Wisconsin prior to 2016, before the company was acquired by Schilke. These early Greenhoe horns are known for their exceptional craftsmanship, unique tuning and bracing architecture, and a tonal core that’s rich, vibrant, and free-blowing.
This particular instrument features a rare 9" rose brass Conn 88H bell, a Greenhoe tenor valve section, and a lightweight dual bore .547–.562 handslide with one removable leadpipe. The slide is fantastic, extremely responsive, and offers a perfect balance between openness and control.
Previously owned by a professional trombonist (now deceased), this horn has seen serious play but remains in excellent playing condition. It has not had shop service here, because it does not require any clean-up. The finish shows minor lacquer loss and a few very small dings on the bell stem/flare, which could easily be addressed during a future shop visit if desired. We’ve left the horn exactly as it came in — fully functional, with the original personality intact.

Are original Greenhoe trombones better than Schilke-Greenhoe models made in Chicago?
That depends on what you value. Original Greenhoe trombones, built by Gary Greenhoe himself in Wisconsin, are prized by collectors and professionals for their hand-fit craftsmanship and unique feel. Many players feel they have a slightly more custom, boutique quality and tonal personality.
The newer Schilke-Greenhoe models, made in Chicago, offer improved consistency and machining with CNC precision — excellent instruments in their own right.
We believe that the current Greenhoe makes are amazing instruments — they also come with a lifetime warranty.
